12. CRYSTALS

WHEN I ARRIVED THE NEXT MORNING with my casserole, as well as the focaccia, cashews, grapes, and salad—two trips from the car—I saw that James had brought his crystals and was showing them off in the living room. After I’d stored the food, I saw there were several large crystals that you could see little eddies of clouds in—James said these were particularly fine—a large amethyst crystal, a thunder egg, and a cluster of small crystals. These were mostly clear, but some had rose in them, some purple, some yellow. Everyone gathered around oohing and aahing.

“They’re so gorgeous,” said Talitha.

“I love the big ones,” said James. “I’m going to have a crystal garden at the entrance to Hecate’s Cauldron. A pool with goldfish and crystals around it.”

“I love the purple one,” said Sharon. “I could live with a crystal like that.”

“Let me show you something,” said James. “Just stand there, Sharon, and I’ll walk into your aura.”

“What?”

“Just stand there.” He went to the far end of the living room and pulled out his pendulum, a real one, not a practise one. “It’ll jump when I get to your auric field.” He held it out and walked slowly toward her. The pendulum jumped maybe eight feet away.

“Good. Now pick up the amethyst crystal, the purple one, and hold it in your hand.” He went back and walked toward her again. The pendulum jumped maybe sixteen feet away.

“See how it extends your auric field?”

“Is that good?”

“Well, yes. It’s your presence in the world.”

“I bet yours is huge, James!” said Sharon.

“It’s bigger when I’ve got crystals. That’s one reason I love them.”

Rosetta appeared suddenly. She was wearing a green velvet jumpsuit. “You can also expand your aura by drinking water.”

“And by putting crystals in water,” said James, “and then holding them.”

“I’m sorry,” Rosetta said, “I was out late with Mark.”

I felt a twinge of yearning for Brian.

“What a great outfit!” said Talitha.

“Great colour,” said Andrea. “You’ve got to have long legs to wear it, though.”

“We’re doing crystals and auras,” James announced, perhaps unnecessarily.

“Everything has an energy field, not just crystals,” said Rosetta. “Wait a minute.”

She vanished and came back with a few pairs of rods like the ones she used sometimes. “These are energy rods,” she said. “They are more powerful than pendulums and more accurate. It’s the same idea. Let go of your inner knowing and see if they want to close. Closing means ‘yes.’”

She handed the energy rods over to about half of us, and then instructed us to choose a partner and measure each other’s aura.

I turned toward Vivienne, who had appeared unobtrusively (unusual for her). How had she gotten in? She mentioned that she had used energy rods before, but she didn’t say where. “You can use them to find water, too,” she said. “And energy vortexes. I found an energy vortex once and brought it home.”

I was impressed. “Do you have it now?”

“I left it up north. You take the energy rods. Ask them to respond to my aura.
